Nancy Dollar was known for being somewhat of a celebrity in the Fort Payne area. She was notorious for fortune-telling and was even nicknamed "Granny" by members of the community.

As her age progressed, "Granny" suspected that her time to pass was quickly approaching and began putting aside a tombstone fund. But, after she died in January 1931 at the age of 108, a band of thieves broke into her home and stole the money. For years, the old woman was spotted by numerous residents wandering around the area with her deceased dog, Buster.

In 1973, the town of Mentone pitched in and saved enough money to erect a tombstone in her honor. The ghost has not been seen since.
