To "Y" or not to "Y," that is the question -- at least, that's the question if you're fast-rising country star Scotty McCreery. The 19-year-old singer first came to public attention with the 'Y' firmly attached to the end of his first name, but now that he's older and more mature, he's been mulling dropping it in favor of just plain "Scott."

“It depends on the day,” the 'American Idol' season 10 winner tells Country Weekly. He admits that now that he's in college, he sometimes writes his name as "Scott" on his papers.

“I remember during 'American Idol' when they called to ask what I wanted to be known by, and we had to hang up and talk about it," McCreery relates. "It’s one of those things that is tough to decide. I mean, what if there was a Ken Chesney or a Ken Rogers or, heck, a John Cash. That would be weird!”

Though it looks like he'll be keeping the "Y" in his name -- at least in public -- for now, McCreery is looking forward to maturing musically for his next album, which is tentatively slated for release in the fall. He has been writing for the new project, as well as sifting through songs from Nashville's top writers.

"For me it’s all about the songs for this next one," he told Taste of Country back in December. "I think the album as a whole, it will mature as I mature. It will be cool for me when I’m older to look back and see my albums, listen to them and see how, when I was 17-18 I made ‘Clear as Day,’ and when I was 19-20 I made this next album, and kind of see how the songs and the albums matured as I matured. I’m looking forward to it."
