There are many great organizations in and around Tuscaloosa that do selfless work for others, but through the help of our listeners, one group was identified as a Bright Spot in our community.

The submission form that brought the group to our station's attention read:

They have served our community so well that they have spread across the entire state of Alabama serving thousands of children every school year with back pack meals.

What started as a program to help 18 children at one Tuscaloosa elementary has grown into an organization that serves all of the elementary schools Tuscaloosa City, Tuscaloosa County, and Fayette County eight years later. In conjunction with the Alabama Credit Union, Secret Meals for Hungry Children provides food to over 1,100 children each Friday while school is in session.

The organization will receive $300 from the radio station to assist in their efforts, and director Kelly Porter said that 100 percent of the money will continue going to the children.

"All of the money donated to Secret Meals will be used to purchase food packs, which will then be slipped into the backpacks of children who have been identified by school officials as going without food over the weekend," Porter said. "The food packs provided are 3.5lbs and contain vitamin-fortified child-friendly food items."
