Majestic hunting beast that Petey is, I shouldn't be surprised to discover he successfully treed an opossum in a pear tree last night. What I am unclear on is how he convinced the marsupial to climb down from his perch and into his mouth.

No doubt you've heard and understood the phrase 'playing possum' but if you're like me, you never actually got close enough to one to see where the saying originated from.

After returning home from chasing the Super Moon, Petey met me at the drive and started showboating with his prize hanging from his mouth. He dropped the animal in front of my car enabling my hi-beams to spotlight his carnage. I called Perry and asked him to remove the possum from my path but upon approach, he called out, 'it's not dead.'

We pulled Petey away and stuck him in the garage so the possum could escape. As I walked back to my car, I began videoing and was lucky enough to catch the end of the little guy's ruse:

Am I the only one who didn't realize opossums liked water?
