Olympic star Oscar Pistorius broke down in tears as he stood before magistrate Desmond Nair. Pistorius is being charged with murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp.

A news reporter in the court said that Pistorius "sobbed uncontrollably" with his head bowed when the charges were read aloud. The case was postponed until Tuesday and Pistorius will remain in police custody until next week.

Police were called to Pistorius's home in a gated community in eastern Pretoria around 4am on Thursday morning by neighbors who heard gunshots. Upon arrival, police found the body of Steenkamp; she had been shot four times and a 9mm pistol was found at the scene. Investigators speculate she was shot through a bathroom door. It wasn't the first time police responded to a call at the residence for a domestic dispute.

A statement on behalf of Pistorius's family and management said "he denies the charge in the strongest terms."
