What does the city consider open burning? Tuscaloosa Fire & Rescue Service says open burning is an outdoor fire where wood or other combustible materials are burned for agricultural, entertainment, training or other approved purposes. So, what can be burned?

It's a simple list. Only untreated wood and vegetation. Open fires must be limited in size, attended, controlled and not a hazard to people, property or standing vegetation.

What is prohibited? Paper, cardboard, heavy oils, paint, rubber, asphaltic materials, plastics, refuse, animal remains, garbage, or any other material that emits dense smoke or noxious odors.

So how do you know if you need a burn permit? A burn permit is needed for Bonfires, Agricultural Burning, Silvicultural Burning are included.

To apply for a burn permit, contact Fire Prevention at 248-5420 Monday - Friday 7am to 5pm. And as always "Turn Your Attention to Fire Prevention".
