20 years ago, the City of Northport, received a federal grant to fund a 7 million dollar project to improve Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.  Northport Mayor, Mayor Donna Aaron says she was a city councilwoman in 1998 and the plans to widen and improve MLK were simply put on the back burner after vocal public opposition arose.

Northport City Council President Jay Logan said the topic became a "hornet's nest" and the council voted to kill the project entirely.  Thankfully, this week Northport has entered into a prelim agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation that will resurrect the project.

According to the Tuscaloosa News, the Former city administrator Charles Swann said what began in 1998 as a plan to widen MLK Jr Boulevard to three lanes transformed into an effort to beautify it and make it more pedestrian-friendly.
