The second week of Alabama's spring camp started on Tuesday afternoon when the team worked out for two hours in full pads for the first time.

"Today was our first real practice in pads and I've been very pleased with the progress we've made through the first two days in terms of a lot of learning going on, a lot of new players getting a lot of opportunity and a lot of repetitions," Saban said.

Eyes were on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has made a quick return from a broken bone in his hand. The sophomore was going through drills and make some soft throws already.

"Tua's actually able to do stuff in practice today. Actually able to hand the ball off, could grip the ball, could throw the ball a little bit."

Saban took time to compliment his medical staff, which always seems to get players back on the field ahead of the expected recovery time.

"Tua has made a very nice recovery from his hand. You know, he did have a break. Dr. Cain and our medical staff do a fantastic job here, I you what, We probably have the best medical staff and the best medical group of people, Dr. Andrews, Dr. Cain. their whole group of people over there have done a phenomenal job with so many players here.

Saban spoke for about 10 minutes total after Tuesday's practice. Here's what else he touched on:

  • He explained why VanDarius Cowan has missed practices in the early part of spring and laid out the expectations he has for his players.
  • His thoughts on the passing of former Miami Dophins owner Wayne Huizenga.
  • How limited Tua will be in practice the rest of spring.
  • His thoughts on Deionte Thompson's progress in the secondary and what he's seen from him so far.
  • The possibility of scheduling home-and-home series rather than neutral site games.
  • What he likes about JUCO transfer defensive back Saivion Smith and his early impressions of him as a player.
  • His approach to coaching the secondary doesn't change despite the limited numbers and lack of experience in that group.
  • An update on the kicking game.
