Today marks the first day that breweries in Alabama are able to sell directly to consumers thanks to something called House Bill 176.

HB176 states,

  • Breweries that make less than 60,000 barrels per year to directly sell up to 288 ounces of its beer per customer per day for off-premises consumption.
  • Breweries can donate up to two kegs of its beer to a licensed charity event.
  • Alabama brewpubs are no longer required to open only in historic buildings, historic districts or economically distressed areas.

What exactly does that mean for you and I? We can now get our growlers filled and buy a brewery's bottled or canned beer at the brewery. A major breakthrough for our state and the beer drinker across it!

Some in Alabama opened at midnight last to get a jump start on the excitement. Me? I texted Druid City Brewing Company co-owner Bo Hicks and he opened early today so that I might be the first (at least I hope I was) to purchase a growler full of Tuscaloosa made craft beer!

Here's the Facebook live video of everything that went down this morning!
