Team USA defeated Japan, 6-1, on Sunday night in Irvine, Calif., to win its eighth World Cup, with current Alabama outfielder Haylie McCleney and former pitcher Jaclyn Traina representing the Crimson Tide on the national team. This is Traina’s third season with Team USA and McCleney’s second.

Alabama is one of five schools with multiple current or former players on the roster along with Florida, Michigan, Oregon and Tennessee. Eight of the roster’s 18 players are from the SEC, making it the most represented conference on the team, just ahead of the Pac 12 with six players.

McCleney appeared in all seven games, batting .375 (6-16) with five runs scored. She had multi-hit performances on June 29 vs. Mexico (2-4) and July 4 vs. Venezuela (2-2), scoring a pair of runs in the latter. The Morris, Ala., native is a three time All-American at Alabama and is the current career leader in batting average (.449) and on-base percentage (.561). This past season, she was named the Academic All-American of the Year and the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Traina appeared in three games, allowing just one earned run over 9.2 innings pitched (0.76 ERA) with 10 strikeouts and five hits allowed. She earned wins against Puerto Rico (June 30) and Venezuela (July 4). From 2011-14, Traina was a four time All-American at Alabama and helped lead the Crimson Tide to its first national title in 2012, pitching every inning at the Women’s College World Series that season.

Sunday’s championship marked the seventh meeting between USA and Japan in the title game and the win gave USA at 5-2 record in those meetings. Team USA finished the weekend with a 7-1 record, its lone loss coming against Canada, 4-1, on July 3. Over the seven games played, Team USA outscored its opponents 46-7, including shutouts over Mexico (4-0, June 29), Argentina (10-0, July 1) and Venezuela (7-0, July 4).
