Kelly Clarkson provided a moment of empowerment during Sunday night’s 2015 Billboard Music Awards. Her song “Invincible” was not only a strong vocal showcase, it was a reminder of the singer’s character.

The orchestral ballad was a powerful statement about picking yourself back up after someone has beaten you down. It’s about breaking ties with bad relationships. Clarkson uses metaphors like being beaten down like a waterfall before the song turns.

No I ain’t a sad little girl,” she sings. “Now I am invincible / I ain’t a scared little girl no more.

Dressed in a plum, knee-length gown, Clarkson stood mostly still as she belted out the lyrics to her second single from Piece by Piece. While not a country single per se, one sees crossover potential should she decide to take it there. Big Machine Label Group president Scott Borchetta certainly seemed to approve — he and his wife were shown smiling and nodding in the audience.

Overall there wasn’t much country at the 2015 BBMAs. Little Big Town and Faith Hill performed, Florida Georgia Line presented and won an award, and Brett Eldredge presented. Many of the night’s categories that contained country artists were announced before the show.
