In 1838, Judson College was founded by Julia Tarrant Barron, General Edwin D. King, and Milo P. Jewett who were all members of Siloam Baptist Church from Marion, Alabama. The all female college was named after Ann Hasseltine Judson who was the first female foreign missionary from the United States.

The principal building of the campus is Jewett Hall was built in 1840. The first structure was a four-story Greek revival building named after the first president of the college.

In 1888, it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt that same year. In 1947, another fire consumed the second structure after lightening struck the dome. Funds were raised for rebuilding the main hall from the sale of bricks from the rubble. The final structure remains in place today.

Judson College is the fifth oldest women's college in the United States.
