During their recent concerts, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit have been sharing tributes to the late Tom Petty. At a Saturday (Oct. 7) show in Memphis, Tenn., Isbell and his band performed two of Petty’s tunes, while at the first of a series of shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Monday (Oct. 9), they offered up a third song.

Readers can press play above to watch Isbell cover Petty’s “Even the Losers” in Memphis. The singer-songwriter played the song alone onstage, using just his voice and an acoustic guitar, but his full band was present for the rest of the set, which took place at the Mempho Music Festival at Shelby Park Farms.

Also during the Mempho Music Festival, Isbell and the 400 Unit covered Petty’s “American Girl.” Press play below to watch that performance.

Petty died on Monday (Oct. 2), after suffering a heart attack early that morning. The unexpected death set the music world back on its heels again, only hours after news of the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Nev., broke.

“I can’t think of an important moment in my life without an accompanying Tom Petty song,” Isbell posted after Petty’s death. “Every night we walk off stage to his music.”

At Isbell and the 400 Unit’s Ryman Auditorium concert — the first in a six-night residency at the historic venue — they performed Petty’s “Refugee;” readers can watch that performance above.

Isbell and the 400 Unit are back on tour following a brief hiatus due to a death in the family of 400 Unit bassist Jimbo Hart.
