Grab the tissues, y’all — Jason Isbell has released the music video for his song “If We Were Vampires," and it features animated versions of himself and wife Amanda Shires. Readers can press play above to watch the clip.

Directed by Neilson Hubbard and Joshua Britt, the "If We Were Vampires" music video features the caricatures of Isbell and Shires as post-apocalyptic outlaw lovers avoiding the inevitability of death. Considering the morbid nature of the song's subject matter, the imagery in its accompanying video is incredibly beautiful.

For fans who haven't listened closely to the lyrics, "If We Were Vampires" explores a reality that most of us just aren't willing to confront: "It's knowing that this can't go on forever / Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone," sings Isbell in the song's chorus, with Shires on harmony. "Maybe we'll get 40 years together / But one day I'll be gone / Or one day you'll be gone."

“If We Were Vampires” appears on Isbell’s newest studio album, The Nashville Sound, which was released back in June. He and his band, the 400 Unit, are on tour throughout the fall, including a five-night residency at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium in October.
