Jake Owen Remembers Troy Gentry, Don Williams With ‘Good Ole Boys Like Me’ [WATCH]

Jake Owen found a way to honor both Montgomery Gentry‘s Troy Gentry and Don Williams on social media recently. Gentry and Williams both died on Friday (Sept. 8), and Owen paid tribute to them with a cover of Williams’ song “Good Ole Boys Like Me.”

A Top 5 single for Williams, “Good Ole Boys Like Me” was written by Bob McDill and released as a single in 1980. The tune appears on Williams’ Portrait album.

“I can still hear the soft Southern winds in the live oak trees / And those Williams boys they still mean a lot to me / Hank and Tennessee,” Owen sings. “I guess we’re all gonna be what we’re gonna be / So what do you do with good ole boys like me.”

News of Gentry’s and Williams’ deaths came within an hour or so of each other on Friday. Williams was 78 years old and died following a brief illness. Gentry, 50, was killed in a helicopter crash in New Jersey.

In March of 2016, Williams announced his retirement; he most recently released a new album, Reflections, in 2014 and spent much of 2015 on the road. Gentry, meanwhile, was scheduled to play a concert with duo partner Eddie Montgomery in New Jersey on Friday night; according to Average Joes Entertainment, the duo’s record label, Montgomery Gentry had recently completed a new album. The helicopter crash in which Gentry died also killed the helicopter’s pilot, James Evan Robinson.

celebration of life event in Gentry’s honor is scheduled for Thursday (Sept. 14). Williams’ funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
