Nick Saban took the podium for the first time this fall to talk about his team on Friday after the team's first practice, and it was a chance to hear about the progress made since A-Day.

"I thought we had a really good summer with our players. This fall camp testing that we did after the summer conditioning program was one of the better results that we've had. I think we only had maybe 12 or 13 guys that didn't pass the test which is tied for the lowest."

Like most other fall camps, Saban preached two key qualities he wants his team to work on.

"I think it's very, very important for us to develop the kind of discipline and toughness, you know, and those two intangibles are going to be very important to how we develop as a team."

Here are the topics Saban touched on during the press conference:

  • The goal of camp is to gain consistency.
  • Thought the first practice was really good but nearly every player hit their breaking point at some time during the practice.
  • The leadership on the team is a work in progress.
  • Eyabi Anoma (jaw) and Nigel Knott were the only two players in black jerseys. Terrell Lewis was the only player out of practice.
  • An update on the secondary and what he's seen from the group he has now.
  • Developing depth at the linebacker position.
  • How the offensive line looks and which players might play multiple positions
  • What it takes to be a good leader and specifically how Mack Wilson is handling that role.
  • Thoughts on the new kickoff rule
