Hairstyle Appreciation Day celebrates the uniqueness of all styles of hair and honors the people who make artful hairstyles possible.

Hairstyling is an artful skill and if you've ever suffered from a hair disaster from a previous stylist, show your appreciation today to the one who makes being seen in public possible.

I've been with Katie Kunkle-Hayes for over 15 years and I still remember the first time I ever sat in her chair. Desperate for a few extra seconds of sleep, I'd gone temporarily insane after the birth of my first son and cut all my hair off...'over-the-ears' off. I looked like Sylvester Stallone's ex-wife, Brigitte Nielson when she was rolling with Flav:

Growing out my hair proved nearly impossible with my stylist (actually...he was a barber), so I called New Creations and asked for an appointment with whoever was open right that second. Katie was fresh out of cosmetology school, so her book was open and thus began our magical journey.

Since that fateful day, there have been many cuts, colors and even a tragedy between us.

Two years ago, I decided getting another perspective and taking a 'break' from Katie was a brilliant idea. For the first six-months, things were fine with my new stylist until I paid a painful price for my hairffair. The stylist failed to put a guard on her clippers and if I close my eyes, I can still hear the blades bog down on my scalp. From the back, I looked like Moe from the 'Three Stooges'.

Later that night, I sent Katie a text which included a picture of my hair and visible tear drops on my sweater. She told me to come in the next morning and, as my friend Danielle so eloquently stated later, Katie taking me back without question was 'real love'.

So today, I salute you Katie Kunkle-Hayes for the cuts you've created, the colors you've mixed and the compliments I've enjoyed as a result of your shear artistry.
