Erected in 1847 by F. H. Chamberlain, the Grand Hotel has been a fixture in Point Clear, Alabama and was once a prime vacation spot for wealthy, Victorian-era families. The original structure had two stories with 40  guest rooms, a dining room and kitchen, as well as a full-service bar called the Texas. The hotel -- located on the eastern shore of Alabama -- was only accessible by boat.

In 1871, a 200-passenger steamboat named Ocean Wave exploded off the coast of Point Clear and the Texas Bar was used as an emergency hospital to treat survivors. Sadly, the accident claimed the lives of almost 40 individuals.

The Grand Hotel has survived fires, floods and hurricanes but the Marriott owned property boasts 405 guests rooms and continues to attract tourists today.
