Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington suffered chest pain on Monday (July 18), causing the band to cancel a forthcoming concert in New York. Now, the band reveals he needed heart surgery, and they have cancelled several more shows in the process.

Lynyrd Skynyrd announced the news on their Facebook page, stating they need to stay off the road for a few more weeks, and telling fans Rossington needed a blockage repair in his arteries.

“The Lynyrd Skynyrd band is canceling or rescheduling the next 2 weeks of touring, while Gary Rossington recovers at home from heart surgery to repair blockage in his arteries,” the group says. “Currently, the band hopes to resume touring on Aug. 4 in Woodlands, Texas. The band has rescheduled Boston, Mass., at Blue Hills Bank Pavilion to Sept. 23 and moved Big Flats, N.Y. at Tag’s Summer Sound Stage to the following day, Sept. 24. We are continuing to work on other potential re-scheduling, as well. Please stay tuned to the Lynyrd Skynyrd website and social media pages for updates.”

Rossington, Skynyrd’s only remaining original member, suffered a heart attack on Oct. 8, causing the band to cancel their remaining 2015 dates. Before that, he had quintuple bypass surgery in 2003. But, he stated in 2015, he wouldn't let his health issues get in the way of his fans and music.

“I just wanted to thank everyone for all the well wishes and support. I will be back before you know it! It’s gonna take more than a lil ole heart attack to keep me down," he said at the time.

On Aug. 4, Lynyrd Skynyrd is scheduled to continue touring with Peter Frampton. Their upcoming tour dates are available on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s website.
