In what seems to be an attempt by Facebook to take on search giant Google, the highly hyped Facebook Graph Search was recently release in Beta to a limited number of people. I signed up to be on the waiting list a few weeks ago and Facebook sent me my approval notice today.  So, what is Graph Search?According to Facebook.com, "Graph search lets you search for more than you’ve been able to find before. You can use simple phrases to search for sets of people, places and things that match specific characteristics."

Making search social will have a big impact I think.

I thought it would be cool. I took a few screen shots of my initial "tour".

When I logged in to Facebook this morning, I was prompted to take a tour.

Facebook  also says "You can search across people, Pages, friends, photos and other content shared with you on Facebook, such as their education, hometown, current city, interests, as well as places, restaurants, books, movies, games and music they like."

In my tour example, Facebook did a simulated search for my friends that went to my High School.

It was kinda cool to see how it works. It allows you to use single phrases to search...Facebook Graph search allows us to search for

  • People who like movies
  • Photos of my friends from my high school
  • Friends who live in my city
  • Restaurants nearby that my friends like

So I could search for "Friends who like Johnny Cash" or  "Friends that play guitar".

Facebook found everyone I am friends with that went to Grove Hill Academy.

I did some random searches and found most anything I wanted very quickly. The kicker is my search results are already backed by friends so there is an instant trust.  Will this new addition to Facebook take away from Google? Time...or should I say Timeline will tell.

Facebook plans on rolling out Graph Search to the masses soon but if you can't wait, sign up here and get on the list!
