Beginning today, Facebook will allow US users to appoint a 'Legacy Contact' that grants rights to a secondary party to preserve or maintain your Facebook account in the unfortunate event of your death.

To appoint a user, open your settings, choose Security and Legacy Contact should appear at the bottom of the page. After choosing your legacy contact and managing their permissions, you’ll have the option to send a message to that person notifying them of their appointment.

The Daily Mail also reports that memoralized profiles have been redesigned to display 'Remembering' above their name and makes it possible for their Legacy Contact to post to the top of their timeline.

Appointing a Legacy Contact is completely optional.
