In a past life, I worked in the construction field. I've been all over the country- inside chemical plants and paper mills. I am (or was) an instrument fitter. On many occasions, I have used one of the circular numbered metal tags. We simply called them our "Brass".Your brass number was assigned to only you. There was a "Brass Shack". Sometimes with a lady that would take your brass and hang it on a nail when you went in to work and hand it back to you on your way out. On other jobs, as you walked by the brass shack, she would move it from one board to another as you called out your number. (In or out.) Some jobs required you to have a Brass to check out tools like a grinder, chord and face shield for example, from the tool room. You'd give the tool room man your brass and he'd give you your tools. You'd get it back when you brought the tools back.

I was watching the movie "October Sky" last night and the coal mine workers were using brass. I took a picture of my TV. (I know right?) I explained to  my wife that when I was a kid I remember seeing dozens of these that belonged to my Dad. I thought they were cool and actually used them myself many years ago. Does anyone still use these?
