Located on the Tensaw River, the historic Blakeley State Park serves as a reminder of how fleeting civilization can be. Also known as 'the South's most beautiful ghost town' little remains of this city that once rivaled the size and scope of Mobile.

Josiah Blakeley moved to Alabama from Connecticut in 1806 and purchased land on the Tensaw. He hired a surveyor to plot a town that was incorporated on January 6, 1814. He died the following year but the town continued to thrive and by 1822, the population had increased to include several thousand people -- more than Mobile at the time. Sadly, a Yellow Fever epidemic swept Blakeley in 1822, 1826 and 1828 and the town was no more.
