It seems there have been more and more black bear sightings in our area and this one has a sad ending.

Jim Daugherty with The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources said a female black bear was hit by a motorist trying to cross the interstate.

The accident happened I-65 north bound between exits 13 and 15. Daugherty also said that black bears are not uncommon and this particular bear weighed around 200lbs. Black bears are protected though and carry a fine if hunted or killed. No charges will be filed for this accident.

I have lived in Alabama for 40 years and have never seen a black bear in the wild. I have talked with people who have seen them. I was told recently that there was a family of black bears living along Hurricane Creek off of Hwy 216. Have you seen one lately?
