Authorities say Birmingham Mayor William Bell and Councilor Marcus Lundy were involved in an altercation behind closed doors during a council meeting this morning.

Councilor Lundy was taken to the hospital by ambulance and Mayor Bell was taken by private vehicle. Witnesses say they heard shouting before the fight began but it's unclear what led to the altercation.

In a press conference, Council President Johnathan Austin said,

What occurred at City Hall today is a direct reflection of the lack of respect towards the Council and unwillingness to corporate which has been ongoing for some time now. We have worked continuously to move this city forward, and it’s a sad day when Council members are attacked while trying to do the job that they were elected to do.

Austin also told reporters that Lundy will file charges.
