The state of Alabama is not exactly synonymous with hipsters. While you'd expect to find these unconventionally trendy people in cities like Brooklyn or Portland, you might be surprised to learn that Auburn is home to one of the most hipster cities in the entire country.

FindTheHome has identified the 19 cities of 50,000 or more people where you'll come across a strong hipster presence. They used four common attributes to determine the top cities: percentage of population ages 20-34, percentage of population with a Bachelor's Degree, the number of yoga studios and cafes per 10,000 people.

After plugging in their data, FindTheHome ranked Auburn No. 8 on the list, beating out the likes of Seattle, Santa Monica, and San Francisco. The city had a high percentage of young people and residents with a Bachelor's Degree.

The top five looked like this:

  1. Hoboken, NJ
  2. Ames, IA
  3. Boulder, CO
  4. Cambridge, MA
  5. College Station, TX

The common denominator seems to be the presence of a major university (except for uber-hipster Hoboken), but you might not have expected to see two of the Southeastern Conference's biggest agricultural colleges make the list.
