On January 31, 1971, Apollo 14 lifted gracefully from its launch pad towards the moon. On board were forest tree seedlings tucked into a tube and nestled closely to Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa.

In 1976 Governor George Wallace was presented with a loblolly pine seedling from the same seeds that journeyed to the moon and back with the Apollo.

The moon tree was planted on the grounds of the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery marked by a marble plaque as a permanent reminder of man's flight into space and its relationship to the forests of America.
