Robby Shelton joined an elite group of players on Sunday. Playing in just the second PGA Tour event of his career, the Alabama junior finished tied for third at the Barbasol Championship.

That's just the 18th time an amateur has placed that high in a PGA tournament since 1940. Even more impressive, it's the first time since Phil Mickelson won as an amateur in 1991.

Shelton carded a final-round 67 to tie Whee Kim and Ricky Barnes at 14-under. The Wilmer, Alabama native was one of only eight players to shoot in the 60s for all four rounds of the tournament.

"It was amazing," Shelton said after his round. "I played well, that's all I could ask for. To do this with a sponsor exemption, it's great. I mean, I'm speechless right now."

Shelton's finish won't come as a surprise to many Alabama fans. The two-time All-American was a key member of the 2014 national championship that defeated Oklahoma State in the finals. That capped off a freshman season that included SEC Player of the Year honors and the Phil Mickelson Award for most outstanding freshman.
