Two of college football's great programs are set to meet for the first time since the 1992 national championship game when Alabama and Miami play in 2021.

The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game announced on Tuesday that the two schools have agreed to open the season in Atlanta for a neutral site showdown. Aaron Suttles first reported the negotiations in mid-August but the game is official now.

It's been nearly three decades since the Crimson Tide and Hurricanes squared off in the Sugar Bowl as the top two teams in the country. Alabama came in as the underdog to a flashy and cocky Miami squad, but Gene Stallings led his team to a 34-13 victory to claim the school's 12th national championship.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to open another season in Atlanta for the 2021 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. Our team and our fans have always enjoyed playing in Atlanta and Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a fantastic competitive environment,” said Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban. “This event always has the feel of a bowl game and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl staff has made it a first-class event. We have a lot of respect for Coach Richt and the Miami program, and we look forward to a great game in 2021.”

Kickoff time and television schedule will be announced much closer to kickoff.
