I've been digging in the Google Archive's of The Tuscaloosa News and finding all kinds of facts that amaze me. Here are 5 Things you may not have known about our city through the years.

Tuscaloosa is one day older than the state of Alabama. Tuscaloosa was  incorporated December 13, 1819. Congress admitted Alabama to the Union as a state the next day.

Fun Facts:

  • In Tuscaloosa in 1940, you could rent a 6 bedroom house for $35 per month and  a used (1929) Ford Sedan would cost you  $50.
  • In 1965, You could own a redecorated 4 bedroom 2 bath brick home for $23,000

  • Minimum wage in 1981 was $3.35 per hour. Sambo's Restaurant in Northport was hiring Managers for $16 to $20 per hour!! (Whatever happened to that place)
  • Our Mayor Walt Maddox Lettered in Football while in college UAB from 91' to '94
