Alabama will face off against Georgia during the regular season for just the fifth time in 20 years on Saturday. Even though these two programs haven't met recently, this series still holds quite a bit of history.

Two of Nick Saban's best victories at Alabama have come against the Bulldogs. The 2012 SEC Championship slugfest and the 2008 Blackout would probably rank in just about every Bama fan's top five. By the end of the season, this weekend's meeting might end up having the same significance for one of these two teams.

Alabama holds an all-time edge of 37-25-4, but this series has been extremely close for a long time. Looking through the history, you'll even find a few stats of interest as you prepare for this 2015 meeting.

Georgia Gave Alabama Its Last 0-2 SEC Start

Nick Saban lost his first SEC opener as Alabama head coach two weeks ago when Ole Miss took advantage of five turnovers and upset the Crimson Tide in Bryant-Denny Stadium. While starting 0-1 in conference is rare at Alabama, starting 0-2 is borderline unthinkable for most fans.

You'll have to go back 25 years to find the last time an Alabama team began conference play with two losses. Gene Stallings' first season in Tuscaloosa began the year with a home loss to Brett Favre and Southern Miss, and followed that with a loss to a ranked Florida team at home and Georgia on the road.

Now in 2015, Alabama lost at home to a ranked Ole Miss team and hits the road for a game with Georgia. Will it happen again?

Teams Have Alternated Wins in Athens Over Past 50 Years

This one is a bit odd and probably doesn't mean a whole lot because of amount of time between matchups, but it's still an interesting nugget. Since 1965, Alabama and Georgia have played in Athens eight times with both team winning four games. But no team has won two consecutive games in Athens.

If that trend holds true, Georgia would be next in line to win in Athens after Alabama blacked out Georgia in 2008.

    High-Scoring Games Have Become Commonplace

For the first 59 meetings between Alabama and Georgia, the two teams combine to score 50 points or more only once. Back in 1952, the Crimson Tide beat the Bulldogs 34-19 in the highest-scoring game of the series. That record of 53 total points lasted until 1994, when Michael Proctor kicked the game-winning field goal with 1:12 remaining to give Alabama a 29-28 win.

Beginning with that dramatic win in 1994, this series has gone over 50 total points in five of the past seven meetings. This Saturday could continue that trend as these two teams combine to average over 70 points per game in 2015.
